Biafo Glacier

Third longest glacier on the Planet

Biafo is hemmed in by gleaming glaciers and jagged granites, smoothing out of snow lake, crevassed at regular intervals; this highway of ice is 63 km long and is the third longest glacier on the planet outside the polar region. Its the ancient route between kingdom of Nagar and Shigar and many caravans have done this treacherous journey over the course last 8-10 centuries.

Biafo glacier offers the easiest route to Snow Lake, and its so vast and wide at the origin that distant trekkers will always seem like moving aunts, while its moraine is boulder-strewn and is definitely the toughest moraine to manoeuvre across.

Biafo means “rooster” in Balti describes the cockscomb shape of the glacier snout.
